Rapid ideation for characters, environments, props, and visual storytelling
Concept art is the visual foundation of every game and film production — and it's also one of the most time-intensive parts of pre-production. Midjourney has become an essential tool for concept artists, art directors, and indie developers who need to explore visual directions rapidly, communicate ideas to teams, and build visual bibles before committing to expensive production assets.

Establish the art style, color palette, tone, and visual influences for your project. Create a mood board of reference images that capture the aesthetic you're targeting.
Create multiple variations of each concept element — characters, environments, props. Use --chaos 30-50 for maximum variety in early exploration phases.
Select the strongest concepts and develop them further using Vary (Subtle) and Vary (Strong). Build out character sheets, environment panoramas, and prop details.
Compile the approved concepts into a visual bible document. Use --sref to ensure all new concepts maintain visual consistency with the established direction.
Indie game studio exploring protagonist designs
Female warrior character, post-apocalyptic setting, scavenged armor with glowing blue energy accents, determined expression, full body concept art, detailed character design, neutral background --ar 1:1 --v 6.1
Film production exploring a key location
Ancient underground temple, bioluminescent fungi lighting, massive stone pillars, mysterious artifacts, atmospheric fog, cinematic concept art, matte painting style, epic scale --ar 16:9 --v 6.1
Game studio designing enemy creatures
Alien creature design, insectoid body with crystalline exoskeleton, multiple limbs, bioluminescent markings, threatening but elegant, creature concept art, multiple angle views, detailed anatomy --ar 4:3 --v 6.1
In the early concept phase, use --chaos 30-50 to get maximum variety. As you narrow down the direction, reduce --chaos to 0-10 for more controlled, consistent results.
Once you have an approved character design, use --cref to generate front, side, and back views. This creates a character turnaround sheet that 3D artists and animators can use as reference.
For environments, always specify scale: "massive", "intimate", "claustrophobic", "vast". Add atmospheric elements: "morning mist", "dramatic storm clouds", "eerie silence". Scale and atmosphere define the emotional impact of a space.
Generate individual props on neutral backgrounds for easy extraction. "A weathered leather-bound tome with brass clasps, isolated on white background, product photography style" gives you clean prop references for 3D artists.
