Explore creative directions by generating multiple variations of any image
The variations system is one of Midjourney's most powerful creative tools. Rather than regenerating from scratch when you want something slightly different, you can generate targeted variations of any image — from subtle refinements to dramatic reinterpretations. This iterative workflow is how professional designers use Midjourney to converge on exactly the right visual.
Start with a prompt and generate your initial 2x2 grid. Identify which of the four images has the strongest composition, lighting, or concept — even if it's not perfect yet.
Click V1-V4 under the grid to select which image to vary. Then choose Vary (Subtle) for small refinements or Vary (Strong) for bigger creative leaps. Use Vary (Region) to change specific areas.
Midjourney generates 4 new variations based on your selected image. Each explores a slightly different interpretation. Look for improvements in the specific areas you wanted to change.
Repeat the variation process, each time selecting the strongest result and varying it further. Professional Midjourney users often go through 5-10 variation rounds to reach a final image.
Designer iterating on a brand mark
After generating initial logo concepts, select the strongest composition and use Vary (Subtle) to refine proportions and weight. Use Vary (Strong) to explore completely different interpretations of the same concept.
Game studio exploring character variations
Generate a base character design, then use Vary (Strong) to explore different costume variations, color schemes, and personality expressions while maintaining the core character identity.
Brand needs the same product in multiple colorways
Generate the base product shot, then use Vary (Region) to select just the product and change the color while keeping the background, lighting, and composition identical.
When you have a composition you like but want to refine details, use Vary (Subtle). When you want to see completely different interpretations of the same concept, use Vary (Strong).
Turn on Remix mode in settings to modify your prompt between variations. This lets you change specific elements — like "change the lighting from golden hour to blue hour" — while keeping the composition.
Use Vary (Region) to fix specific problems — distorted hands, wrong background elements, or incorrect colors — without regenerating the entire image. Select the problem area and describe what you want instead.
Before upscaling, save the full grid image. The 4-variation grid is useful for client presentations showing creative range, and you can always come back to vary a different option later.
