Apply the visual style of any reference image to your new generations using --sref
The --sref (style reference) parameter is a game-changer for brand consistency and creative direction. By providing a reference image URL, you can apply its visual style — color palette, lighting mood, texture quality, artistic treatment — to any new generation. This ensures all your images share a cohesive aesthetic without having to describe the style in words every time.
Select an image whose visual style you want to replicate — this could be a previous Midjourney generation, a photograph, a painting, or any image that captures the aesthetic you want. Upload it to get a direct URL.
Add --sref [image URL] to your prompt. Describe the new subject and scene you want, but let the style reference handle the aesthetic. You don't need to describe the style in words.
Use --sw 0-1000 to control how strongly the style is applied. Lower values (100-300) give a subtle influence. Higher values (700-1000) create a very strong style match. Default is 100.
Use the same --sref image across all generations in a series. This creates a visually cohesive collection where every image shares the same aesthetic DNA, even with completely different subjects.
Marketing team maintaining consistent aesthetic across all campaign images
A woman enjoying morning coffee, lifestyle photography --sref [brand reference image URL] --sw 300 --ar 4:5 --v 6.1
Designer applying a specific artistic treatment to new subjects
A mountain landscape at sunset --sref [reference painting URL] --sw 600 --ar 16:9 --v 6.1
Creator maintaining consistent visual style across a blog or social media series
A cozy home office setup, productivity theme --sref [series style reference URL] --sw 400 --ar 1:1 --v 6.1
When you generate an image you love, save it and use it as a --sref for future generations. This creates a self-reinforcing visual style that becomes uniquely yours.
The power of --sref is that you can describe any subject while the style reference handles the aesthetic. "A dog in a park --sref [moody cinematic reference]" gives you a moody cinematic dog photo without describing the style in words.
You can use multiple --sref images: --sref [URL1] --sref [URL2]. Midjourney blends the styles, which is useful for creating hybrid aesthetics that combine elements from different visual references.
The default --sw 100 is often too subtle to notice. Start with --sw 300-500 for a clear style influence, then adjust up or down based on how strongly you want the reference to show through.
