Upscale images to print-ready resolution with AI-enhanced detail
Midjourney's upscaling system transforms the initial generation grid into high-resolution, detail-rich images suitable for print, large displays, and professional use. The AI doesn't just enlarge the image — it adds new detail, sharpens textures, and enhances fine elements that weren't visible at the smaller preview size. Always upscale before downloading for professional use.
Create your initial 2x2 image grid using a prompt. The grid images are lower resolution previews — they look good on screen but are not suitable for professional use without upscaling.
Identify which of the four grid images has the best composition, lighting, and overall quality. Click U1, U2, U3, or U4 to upscale that specific image.
After the initial upscale, you can choose Upscale (Subtle) to preserve the original image closely, or Upscale (Creative) to let the AI add more detail and interpretation during the upscaling process.
Click the upscaled image to open it at full size, then right-click to save or use the download button. The full-resolution file is suitable for print, large format displays, and professional applications.
Artist creating a large-format print
Generate the artwork at standard resolution, upscale with Upscale (Creative) to add maximum detail, then use Upscale (2x) again for the highest possible resolution suitable for large canvas prints.
Marketing team needs billboard-quality images
Generate product photography at standard resolution, upscale with Upscale (Subtle) to preserve the exact composition, then download for use in large-format advertising materials.
Publisher needs print-quality cover illustration
Generate the cover concept, select the strongest composition, upscale with Upscale (Creative) for maximum detail in textures and fine elements, then export for the print production workflow.
The grid preview images look acceptable on screen but lack the detail needed for professional use. Always click U1-U4 and upscale before downloading — the quality difference is dramatic.
Use Upscale (Subtle) when you want to preserve the exact image as generated. Use Upscale (Creative) when you want the AI to add more detail and interpretation — great for artwork but can change product shots unexpectedly.
For the highest possible resolution, upscale once with Upscale (2x), then upscale the result again. This produces images suitable for very large format printing.
Zoom into the upscaled image at 100% to check fine details — hands, text, faces, and textures. If specific areas need fixing, use Vary (Region) on the upscaled image to correct them.
