Runway's Inpainting and Outpainting tools bring the power of AI image editing to video. Inpainting lets you remove unwanted objects, people, or elements from video footage and fill the gap with AI-generated content that matches the surrounding scene. Outpainting extends the frame beyond its original borders, adding new content that seamlessly matches the existing footage. These tools are essential for professional video editing workflows.
Upload the video clip you want to edit. For inpainting, identify the object or area you want to remove. For outpainting, decide which direction you want to extend the frame.
For inpainting: paint over the object you want to remove. For outpainting: select the direction of expansion and set the amount. The painted area will be replaced with AI-generated content.
Write a prompt describing what should replace the painted area. For inpainting: describe the background that should appear. For outpainting: describe the environment that should extend beyond the frame.
Generate the edited clip and evaluate the quality of the fill. Check for temporal consistency — the fill should look natural across all frames of the clip. Regenerate if needed.
Removing a microphone boom from a film scene
Paint over the microphone boom in the upper frame. Prompt: "ceiling of a modern office, neutral white, consistent with surrounding environment". The boom is removed and replaced with the ceiling.
Extending a vertical video to widescreen format
Select outpainting on both sides of a 9:16 vertical clip. Prompt: "continuation of the urban street scene, consistent lighting and atmosphere, matching the center frame". Creates a 16:9 widescreen version.
Replacing a distracting background in an interview clip
Paint over the entire background behind the subject. Prompt: "modern minimalist office, soft bokeh, professional environment, warm neutral tones". Replaces the background while keeping the subject.
When removing objects, paint slightly beyond the edges of the object to ensure complete removal. Leaving a thin border of the object can cause artifacts in the fill.
When describing the fill content, explicitly match the lighting conditions of the surrounding scene: "soft natural light from the left", "warm studio lighting". Mismatched lighting is the most common inpainting failure.
Outpainting is the best way to convert between aspect ratios without cropping. Convert 9:16 vertical content to 16:9 widescreen by outpainting on both sides.
After generating, scrub through every frame of the edited clip to check for temporal inconsistencies. The fill should look natural and consistent throughout the entire clip.
