Multi-Step Planning

Manus creates its own execution plan — and adapts it dynamically when the unexpected happens

Overview

Unlike tools that execute a single prompt, Manus plans a complete task before starting — creating a structured sequence of actions, selecting the right tools for each step, and adapting the plan in real time as it encounters new information. This planning intelligence is what enables genuinely complex task execution.

Creates explicit step-by-step execution plans before starting any task
Shows you the plan for review before committing to the approach
Adapts the plan dynamically when new information changes the optimal path
Tracks progress through the plan with visible status updates

How It Works

1

Task is Analyzed

Manus analyzes the goal, identifies all required sub-tasks, determines the optimal sequence, and estimates complexity and time requirements.

2

Plan is Presented

Before executing, Manus presents its plan: the numbered steps, which tools it will use for each, and the expected output of each stage.

3

Execution Follows the Plan

Each step is executed in sequence. Manus checks its work at each stage — if a step produces unexpected results, it identifies the issue before proceeding.

4

Adaptive Re-Planning

If a source is unavailable, a step takes longer than expected, or new information changes the best approach, Manus adjusts the remaining plan accordingly.

Real-World Examples

Complex Research Project

Multi-stage market entry analysis

Analyze whether we should expand into the Brazilian market. The plan should cover: market size research, competitive landscape, regulatory requirements, localization needs, and a go/no-go recommendation with financial reasoning.

Due Diligence

Acquisition target research

Conduct a preliminary due diligence report on [Company]. Plan should cover: public financial data, product/technology assessment, founding team backgrounds, customer review analysis, competitive position, and any public legal or PR concerns.

Content Strategy

Building a content marketing plan

Create a 6-month content marketing strategy for our B2B analytics tool targeting data teams. Plan: audience research, keyword gap analysis, content pillar definition, channel strategy, editorial calendar, and success metrics.

Pro Tips

Review the Plan Before Executing

When Manus presents its plan, review it before it starts. If a step seems off, redirect before it executes — much easier than correcting a completed 30-minute task.

Provide Conditional Instructions

"If you find the company is private with no public financial data, focus on product and team signals instead" gives Manus decision rules for common contingencies.

Define Success Criteria

"The plan is complete when we have a recommendation supported by at least 3 independent data sources" tells Manus what 'done' looks like and when to stop searching.

Ask for Plan Alternatives

"Propose 2 alternative approaches to this task with their trade-offs before starting" lets you choose the strategy before Manus commits to a path.

Watch Out For

  • Complex plans with many steps have more opportunities for errors to compound — review intermediate outputs for longer tasks, not just the final result.
  • Manus may choose a less-than-optimal plan for novel or unusual task types — providing more context about your expectations helps guide the planning quality.
