Document Processing

Upload and analyze PDFs, text files, and images with deep comprehension

Overview

Claude reads and reasons over uploaded documents with a level of comprehension that goes beyond keyword extraction. It understands document structure, follows cross-references, and answers questions about meaning, intent, and implication — not just what is written.

Processes PDFs, Word documents, text files, and images
Understands document structure including tables, lists, and footnotes
Extracts specific data points on request with precise source references
Handles multiple documents simultaneously for comparison and synthesis

How It Works

1

Upload Your Document

Attach files directly in the Claude interface. Multiple files can be uploaded in a single conversation for cross-document analysis.

2

Specify What You Need

Ask a targeted question or request a specific output format: summary, risk list, data extraction, comparison table, or Q&A.

3

Deep Reading is Applied

Claude reads the full document including headers, tables, footnotes, and appendices — not just the body text — and processes structural relationships.

4

Precise, Referenced Answers

Responses include references to specific sections so you can verify where information came from and quickly navigate to the source.

Real-World Examples

Research Paper

Extracting methodology and findings

Read this paper and extract: research question, sample size and demographics, methodology, key findings with statistical significance, and limitations acknowledged by the authors.

Policy Document

Understanding compliance requirements

Read this 60-page GDPR compliance document. List every specific obligation it creates for a B2B SaaS company, ranked by implementation effort, with the exact clause numbers.

Proposal Review

Evaluating a vendor proposal

Review this vendor proposal against our requirements document (both attached). Grade each requirement as Met/Partially Met/Not Met and flag any pricing concerns.

Pro Tips

Ask for a Structural Map First

For large documents, first ask "give me a structural overview of this document" before asking specific questions — this helps you know what to ask for.

Compare Against a Template

Upload a reference document ("this is our standard contract") and a new document and ask "how does this new contract deviate from our standard?"

Extract Tables Specifically

If a document has important tables, ask specifically "reproduce the data in table 3 as a structured list" to get clean, queryable output.

Batch Upload for Literature Reviews

Upload multiple papers and ask "compare the methodologies and findings across all documents, noting where authors agree and disagree."

Watch Out For

  • Claude can't access hyperlinks or embedded videos within documents — describe or paste external content separately.
  • Scanned PDFs (image-based, not text) require OCR-readable uploads — Claude cannot read image-only PDFs without text layer.
